Thursday, February 26 to Sunday, March 1, 2009
Houston, Texas, USA
The first-ever international gathering of UU women will be happening right here in Houston! The event is scheduled for February 26 - March 1, 2009, at the downtown Hilton of the Americas near the George R. Brown Convention Center. So far over 400 UUs have registered, with more than 30 from 15 other countries. Exciting speakers are lined up to share their programs that better the conditions of women globally and to inspire global sisters groups to return to their communities and enact powerful programs.
Houston area UUs are needed to be involved in the Convo Local Committee. Contact danaashrawi@gmail.com for more information about how to attend the Local Commitee Meetings. The next meeting is November 9 at the Bay Area Church from 1:30 to 3:30. Another meeting will be held November 23 at Emerson Unitarian Church from 1:30 to 3:30. The Convo needs local musicians, decorators, and volunteers of all kinds, all genders!
See http://icuuw.com/ for more information, including to register to attend. The regular fee is $350, $325 each for a group of 4 people from the same congregation, $299 for youth and young persons ages 14-35, and $300 after a rebate for UU ministers and seminary students.
The goals of the Convocation are to gather together to:
# Discover common interests, emergent ideas and future priorities;
# Worship together, connecting spiritually with our individual and collective power, caring and humility;
# Explore the major challenges that lie before all women around the globe.
# Learn from women’s accomplishments and how their work has improved women’s lives;
# Showcase vibrant, relevant model programs to empower women; and
# Create personal action plans to enrich and transform our lives, while expanding opportunities for women’s equality, development, social justice, security and peace.
Gather Together to Explore Ways We Can Improve Women’s Lives around the World…
The call we hear today is not unlike the one issued nearly a century and a half ago, by Julia Ward Howe:
Arise all women who have hearts…Let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel…Let us then solemnly take counsel with each other as the means whereby the great human family can live in peace.
