On Naked Monks and Virgin Mothers: Sex and Gender in Religious Traditions

You are invited to attend a presentation at First UU on Monday, April 27, at 7:00 PM by Andrea Jain, M.A., lecturer in the Religious Studies program at the University of Houston. She is teaching Religions of India including Hinduism and Jainism. Her presentation will evaluate the moments of affirmation and moments of defamation in religion's approach to gender difference and sexuality cross-culturally. She will examine the religious body as a lens of viewing different religious phenomena in which gender and sexuality are constructed. Some examples of topic include: goddess traditions, celibacy and asceticism, and religious rules for marriage and sex.
