UPDATE!
August 16, 2019
After learning of new developments at the border, unfortunately, our mission trip to Laredo had to be cancelled. According to volunteers at Catholic Charities in that city, “extremely low numbers of refugees” were arriving as more refugees were not being allowed to reach the shelters.
First UU Church would like to thank everybody who signed up, donated items and shared this information with other concerned community members. A very special message of appreciation to those who were willing to go, especially on such a short notice.
One truck load of donations received (a LOT of donations!) will be taken to a Mexican shelter in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico, where refugees are being served. We are making sure all donated items are delivered to local organizations helping the people who need them most right now.
Another truck load of donations will be taken to the center in Laredo, to help them prepare for the next influx of families.
“I will continue to try and find a meaningful outlet for those of us who want to DO SOMETHING,” Valerie, the organizer and coordinator of this effort for First UU Church said. “I can’t thank you enough for volunteering to join me on this trip,” she concluded.
